The developers were actually originally going to carry over that animated character select screen aspect into Melee, and there is scrapped data for select and wait animations for most of the cast as I recall.

An update has just been pushed to the nightly build which removes the 1 frame physics delay, a bug that has existed in Smashs engine since Brawl (even P).

You can customize your randomization by specifying number of players, adding characters to a deny list, and choosing characters by theme.
